Middletown Township, Delaware County $18.48 Originally home to the Unami (Delaware) branch of the Lenni Lenape peoples, historians have dated the founding of Middletown Township to 1686. Residents made their livelihood through agriculture, animal husbandry, and milling. Throughout the 19th century, manufacturing, retail, and professional services increased. Middletown has been home to many prominent citizens, including Jacob and Minshall Painter, whose systematic planting of thousands of varieties of trees and shrubs survives today as the Tyler Arboretum. Samuel D. Riddle was best known for breeding legendary racehorses. His community legacy lives on through the donation of his estate and farm to create Riddle Memorial Hospital. Middletown Township has grown to a thriving community, and today most of the farms and open fields have been replaced with retail and residential developments. |

Springfield Township, Delaware County $17.55 Carved out of the wilderness in the 1680s, Springfield Township was formed as Quaker families seeking religious freedom settled the area. In a region roughly bounded by Darby Creek to the east and Crum Creek to the west, the early settlers shared forests with the native Lenni Lenape tribe. Just nine miles west of the port of Philadelphia, Springfield harnessed tumbling creeks with mills during the industrial revolution and provided the growing commonwealth with edge tools from Beatty Ax Works and fabric from Victoria Plush Mill. Builders used abundant stone quarries to construct grand homes, including that of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s first chief engineer, J. Edgar Thomson, who laid out the famous Horseshoe Curve and Main Line to Pittsburgh. The construction of the Media Shortline Trolley helped Springfield grow, as did the Saxon Avenue Shops and unique developments such as Windsor Circle and Rolling Road. Springfield Township documents the area’s transformation into a modern town rich with amenities and community organizations. |

Remembering Delaware $15.48 Dela-where? is a joke that all too often hits a nerve with residents of the second smallest state, but Dela-here is a great place to be–amid all the big cities of the Eastern Seaboard but just far enough from the beaten path to have its own unique identity. With a selection of fine historic images from her best-selling book, Historic Photos of Delaware, Ellen Rendle provides a valuable and revealing historical retrospective on the growth and development of Delaware in Remembering Delaware. This collection of photographs celebrates the First State’s history with an eclectic mix of rural and urban, from the rolling hills and swift streams of New Castle County to the flat and rich agricultural lands of Kent and Sussex counties to the enduring beauty of the beach communities of the Atlantic Coast. Subjects range from horse-drawn farm machinery and black powder wagons to the celebratory openings of the Delaware Memorial and the Chesapeake Bay bridges. Years of growth and growing pains are buoyed with proud and happy moments at ship christenings, the Delmarva Chicken Festival, and cultural achievements. A tour of Remembering Delaware is sure to provide an illuminating and fond journey back into the state’s rich history. |

Delaware Farming $17.45 Delawareas agricultural traditions have helped define the state for generations. Farmers and millers were part of the Breadbasket of the Revolution, providing critically important wheat and flour for George Washingtonas armies. In the 19th century, Delaware became known as the Peach State, shipping fresh peaches by rail to urban markets throughout the eastern United States. In 1855, the first cannery on the Delmarva Peninsula started operations in Dover, inaugurating a still viable and active agricultural industry. Sussex County, Delaware, is the birthplace of the modern broiler chicken industry, beginning with an accidental experiment on Cecile Steeleas Ocean View farm in 1923. This agricultural heritage continues; 42 percent of Delawareas land mass remains in farms, despite significant land development since World War II. |

Seaford, Delaware $18.61 Located on the Delmarva Peninsula, between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Seaford has always been a land rich in resources. The area was used by the Leni-Lanape Indians for both hunting and fishing and was first settled by Europeans in the seventeenth century. As early settlers raised their families and new generations thrived, Seaford began to take shape. Churches, businesses, schools, and other civic and social institutions were formed, and, in 1835, Seaford became an established town. A vibrant riverside community on the banks of the Nanticoke in Sussex County, Seaford has long been one of the Eastern Shoreas most important economic sites. From the oyster houses and boatyards lining the river to the numerous produce farms and canneries to DuPontas first textile plant, many industries have contributed to the growth and stability of the greater Seaford area. Images in this visual retrospective not only provide glimpses of these important businesses of days gone by, but also pay tribute to the remarkable people and places that have given Seaford its proud heritage. |

A Delaware Album, 1900-1930 $27.06 A Delaware Album, 1900-1930 contains over 300 postcard photographs from the entire state taken during the period from 1900 to 1930. Arranged by subjects–City and Town Views; Delaware Beaches; Amusements; Industry and Agriculture; Signs of the Times; Trains, Trolleys, and Automobiles; Water Transportation; Schools; Religion; Businesses; Hotels and Motels–each photo has a caption ranging from a sentence or two to several paragraphs. The book’s introduction details how the cards were produced, analyzes the subject matter depicted on the cards, documents the history of several of the most prominent local photographers in the state whose work is found almost only on postcards, and traces the evolution and popularization of postcard photography. Through the photographs readers can witness the development of Delaware agriculture and fisheries, the expansion of the railroad into southern Delaware, the declining days of steamship service on Delaware rivers and creeks, the fate of Middletown’s last trolley, and Delaware’s unsuccessful campaign against "King Alcohol." They can see how Delawareans worshiped, worked, and shopped. They can visit local amusement parks and beaches from New Castle county to Sussex county. For the early decades of the twentieth century the postcard recorded every aspect of American life. As local historians will tell you, the photographic record of small town America during the period from 1900 to 1930 exists almost only on postcards. That is why historical societies, libraries, and museums have begun to amass postcard collections. In the last twenty years, historians and scholars have increasingly turned to the postcard as a way of seeing what our past literally looked like–what we enjoyed doing, where we worked and played, how we viewed one other, what we thought was important, and what prejudices we held. |

An American County Historical Chronology $32.1 In colonial times, present day Harford County included the county seat of Baltimore County when Baltimore County embraced parts of present day Pennsylvania, Delaware, and most of northeast Maryland. Harford County has had a large impact on the Chesapeake Bay since it is bounded on the east by the Susquehanna River, and the County is located at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. In colonial times, Harford County contained seaports, but due to siltation, the coastline is now used for water recreation and sports. Most of the ground transportation along the east coast passes through Harford County; and it is only 25 miles from Baltimore and within commuting distance of Washington D.C., Delaware, and the Philadelphia area. Harford County was almost entirely a quiet rural farming community until President Woodrow Wilson made it the home of Aberdeen Proving Ground. Now, Aberdeen Proving Ground is the center of the Army’s research, development, and testing of tanks, vehicles, communications, electronics, computers, intelligence, medical supplies, and ordnance. This book is primarily a chronology of significant events in Harford County, Maryland, but other events outside the County are included if they eventually influenced or elucidated events in the County. Many of the events listed impacted the nation and world. This book is primarily a chronology of significant events in Harford County, Maryland, but other events outside the County are included if they eventually influenced or elucidated events in the County.
