For those who want to work as well as live in Essex, it also has a diverse industrial economy including major electronic companies, pharmaceutical companies and car manufacturing. The northern part of the county makes way to a working agricultural area.
New developments in Essex are very popular as people are realising that Essex is a good place to live. With the diversity of social, leisure and community things to do for families and single people in the county, it is a great place to live as well as being easy to commute from into London. There’s 350 miles of Essex coastline, so buyers can easily buy a new home in an Essex coastal town that has views of the sea, perhaps even buying a second property to rent out or visit for holidays.
If you are a keen rambler, Essex provides extensive countryside and well known Essex walks. From Epping Station at the end of the Central Line to Harwich is an 82 mile walk along the Essex Way. Across Essex, there are a whole host of hikes that will suit all types of walkers. Epping Forest is Essex’s renowned ancient forest and has areas of woods, heathland and ponds. There are a whole range of family and leisure activities available in this woodland including mountain biking and horse riding.
For the more peaceful way of life, historic towns in Essex can give a slower pace of living. Colchester, Maldon and Chelmsford, which is the Essex County Town, are all steeped in history attracting visitors and tourists and for would-be residents, have a range of new housing developments.
Essex is a good location to both live and work with a range of things to do.

Essex $19.96 Advertised in a 1909 sales brochure as "The Rising Suburb of the East," Essex, Maryland, has seen its fate and fortune rise and fall and rise again. The town enjoyed its early reputation as a haven for city dwellers with picnic groves, hunting and fishing clubs, dance halls, and waterfront amusement parks. The boom continued with new jobs and prosperity until the 1950s, when a fire destroyed much of the town’s main street. Economic decay set in as a result of the loss of industry and an influx of low-income housing. Several attempts at redevelopment and legislation failed, resulting in the residents’ distrust of government intervention. Finally a county-backed Renaissance project was established in 2002, bringing Essex a new epithet: "The Hidden Gem of Baltimore County." |

The Complete Essex County $26.37 Where does a young boy turn when his whole world suddenly disappears? What turns two brothers from an unstoppable team into a pair of bitterly estranged loners? How does the simple-hearted care of one middle-aged nurse reveal the scars of an entire community, and can anything heal the wounds caused by a century of deception? Award-winning cartoonist Jeff Lemire pays tribute to his roots with Essex County, an award-winning trilogy of graphic novels set in an imaginary version of his hometown, the eccentric farming community of Essex County, Ontario, Canada. Wicked Puritans of Essex County $18.47 Wicked Puritans of Essex County follows in the footsteps of other Wicked titles and chronicle Essex County’s darker history its "seedy underbelly" that traditional accounts frequently overlook. The book will be a grab bag of malfeasance – corruption, murder, bootlegging, prostitution, any sort of zany, sordid activity. One of the stories will be about the Hoddy Murder. "Wenham, 1637: John Williams a ship’s carpenter, said to be of Wenham, has been found guilty of the murder of John Hoddy and executed in Boston. It is one of the earliest murders occurring among the European settlers of the colony. Both men had recently escaped from the Ipswich jail and were traveling together. Williams murdered his companion and stole his belongings, including the poor man’s bloody clothing. He was apprehended in Ipswich wearing the dead man’s clothes and ultimately confessed when Hoddy’s body was found. He was executed, by hanging, in Boston, September 28th." |

The Greek American Community of Essex County, New Jersey $16.73 This book is about Greek Americans who have lived or live in Essex County, New Jersey. Greeks first started to immigrate to the United States in large numbers after 1900. This book gives the stories of individual Greek American families. It gives a cross section of the Greek immigrants who come to America between 1900 and 1930. And it gives a cross section of the children of these immigrants. A Greek American community is synonomous with a parish of the Orthodox Church. In Essex County the community consisted of four churches. These churches are St. Nicholas, St. Demetrios, St. Fanourios, and Sts Constantine and Helen. The priests who served these churches and their period of service are listed in the book. The churches’ religious services and Sunday and Greek schools greatly participate in shaping the moral character of the people. This book contains the biographies of individual families of the community. The biographies are arranged alphabetically, except that biographies about children or grandchildren of a particular family immediately follow the root family biography, so as to maintain the continuity of that family. The chief characteristics of the first immigrants were their high moral character and their industriousness. They passed these good characteristics onto their children. These immigrants were also highly supportive of education, and saw to it that their children received a good education. Because of all of these factors, today the immigrants’ children and grandchildren are leaders in commerce, industry, education, and government. They have accomplished what their parents desired for them. Truly they have achieved the American dream. |

Essex: The Buildings of England $44.71 Essex, one the largest counties of England, stretches from the suburban fringes of East London to the fishing and sailing ports of Harwich and Maldon and the famous seaside resorts of Clacton, Frinton, and Southend. Its buildings encompass rich Roman survivals, powerful Norman architecture, and the remains of major Tudor and Jacobean country houses. Essex is first and foremost a county famed for its timber buildings, from the eleventh-century church at Greensted to the early and mighty barns at Cressing Temple, and a wealth of timber-framed medieval houses. Later periods have also made their contribution, from Georgian town houses to Victorian and Edwardian industrial and civic buildings, and from important exemplars of early Modern Movement architecture to the major monument of High Tech at Stansted Airport. |

Historic Sites in Virginia’s Northern Neck and Essex County: A Guide $21.24 "Historic Sites in Virginia’s Northern Neck and Essex County " is an indispensible guide for those who have an active or potential interest in the rich history of the Northern Neck region of Virginia and its historic sites. This six-county Tidewater region includes the birthplaces of George Washington, James Madison, James Monroe, and Robert E. Lee. The guide includes a brief history of the region beginning with the exploratory voyages of Captain John Smith up the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers in 1608, and his encounters with various local Native American tribes. The 460 historic sites described here range from grand plantations such as Stratford Hall, to the modest early homes of middling planters, to early churches, schools, and courthouses. Most of these sites still exist, but some "lost" sites are also included because of their historical significance, and as reminders of the continuing need for active preservation efforts. The book contains 445 photos together with 36 maps showing the location of these historic sites. The general cutoff date for inclusion was the Civil War, but the guide contains descriptions of some later sites as well, including many early African American schools and churches, and important sites involving the steamboat and fishing industries. |

Aerial Archaeology in Essex: The Role of the National Mapping Programme in Interpreting the Landscape $34.93 The Essex National Mapping Project (NMP) has been carried out by Historic Environment, Essex County Council as part of the English Heritage National Mapping Programme. In Essex, the NMP contributes to the development of a broader historic environment record that includes historic environment characterisation and other thematic information. The project started in 1993, based on the well-established foundation of skills and data developed by Essex County Council since the mid-1970s. The project covered 190 Ordnance Survey 1:10,000 quarter-sheets and examined the available aerial photographs from several sources and archives for visible archaeological features. More than 10,700 archaeological sites have been mapped and recorded over the course of the project, of which 13.2% were new to the Essex Historic Environment Record. Much of the analysis has been carried out using GIS, which has allowed the archaeological features that have been mapped to be viewed in a landscape context and in conjunction with other geographical information such as geology, topography and historic mapping. This has aided the interpretation of features and allowed new classifications to be established. |

Index to Marriages of Old Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia, 1655-1900 $33.27 Old Rappahannock County, originally embracing lands lying on both sides of the Rappahannock River, was organized in 1656 and was formerly a part of Lancaster County. In 1692 Old Rappahannock was abolished. The portion lying south of the river was taken to form Essex County, and the area north of the river formed the county of Richmond. Records of Old Rappahannock and Essex counties, on which this work is founded, date from 1655 and are on file at the courthouse in Tappahannock, Essex County. Some marriage bonds of the period 1804 to 1853 were previously copied into the marriage register, instituted as the official catalogue of marriages. In compiling this work, Mrs. Wilkerson used not only the marriage bonds found in the register and the marriage register itself, but also inferential marriage proofs derived from wills, deeds, and court order books. The result is a work of astonishing magnitude; the period covered runs to nearly 250 years and the number of persons namedincluding brides, grooms, parents, and guardianstouches 10,000. The text is arranged alphabetically throughout and includes the date of the marriage record and the source. |

Farmers and Fishermen: Two Centuries of Work in Essex County, Massachusetts, 1630-1850 $30.64 Daniel Vickers examines the shifting labor strategies used by colonists as New England evolved from a string of frontier settlements to a mature society on the brink of industrialization. Lacking a means to purchase slaves or hire help, seventeenth-century settlers adapted the labor systems of Europe to cope with the shortages of capital and workers they encountered on the edge of the wilderness. As their world developed, changes in labor arrangements paved the way for the economic transformations of the nineteenth century. By reconstructing the work experiences of thousands of farmers and fishermen in eastern Massachusetts, Vickers identifies who worked for whom and under what terms. Seventeenth-century farmers, for example, maintained patriarchal control over their sons largely to assure themselves of a labor force. The first generation of fish merchants relied on a system of clientage that bound poor fishermen to deliver their hauls in exchange for goods. Toward the end of the colonial period, land scarcity forced farmers and fishermen to search for ways to support themselves through wage employment and home manufacture. Out of these adjustments, says Vickers, emerged a labor market sufficient for industrialization. |
