Where do I go to search for my family history?
I live in London (UK) and am trying to search for my family history. I have done all the research I can online but would like to actually go somewhere to search for the records in person… I have looked at the direct gov website but it isn’t telling where to go! The national archives don’t have the records for births, deaths and marriages so where do I go? Thanks.
For the National Indexes of Registered Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England and Wales, go to the nearest reference library or LDS Family History Centre where you can search them on microfilm. However, it is much easier to search them online at Ancestry.co.uk or http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
The National Archives at Kew have extensive archives including the census, pre-1858 Wills, Military Records, non-conformist parish registers, etc. Browse their website to see what they have that will be useful to you http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records%5Cdefault.htm
Wills since 1858 are held at the Principal Probate Registry at First Avenue House, 42-49 High Holborn, London WC1V 6NP where you can consult the annual indexes http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm
London Metropolitan Archives hold baptism, marriage and burial registers for most of Greater London (though not Bromley and Croydon and maybe a few others which are held locally). You can search these parish registers on microfilm at 40 Northampton Road, Clerkenwell, London, EC1R 0HB. http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Leisure_and_culture/Records_and_archives/
Parish registers for the City of London are held at the Guildhall Library at Aldermanbury, London, EC2V 7HH http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Leisure_and_culture/Libraries/City_of_London_libraries/guildhall_lib.htm
Parish registers for the City of Westminster are held at City of Westminster Archives Centre, 10 St Ann’s Street, London SW1P 2DE
http://www.westminster.gov.uk/services/libraries/archives/
The Society of Genealogists at 14 Charterhouse Buildings, Goswell Road, London EC1M 7BA have a large collection of parish registers on microfilm from all over the country.

Pius XII and the Second World War: According to the Archives of the Vatican $29.95 “In 1964, Pope Paul VI ordered the Vatican diplomatic archives covering the period of World War II opened, and they were eventually published in 12 volumes. Blet taught history at the Pontificia Academia Ecclesiastica for 17 years, and here constructs from those records an account of what is widely perceived as Pius XII’s silence at the time about the Nazi treatment of Jews. He concludes that Pius did much more privately than publicly to protect Jews and others threatened. It was first published as Pie XII et la Secunde Guerre Mondiale by Academique Perrin in 1997.” |

Beyond the Archives: Research as a Lived Process $40.25 This collection of highly readable essays reveals that research is not restricted to library archives. When researchers pursue information and perspectives from sources beyond the archives–from existing people and places– they are often rewarded with unexpected discoveries that enrich their research and their lives."Beyond the Archives: Research as a Lived Process "presents narratives that demystify and illuminate the research process by showing how personal experiences, family history, and scholarly research intersect. Editors Gesa E. Kirsch and Liz Rohan emphasize how important it is for researchers to tap into their passions, pursuing research subjects that attract their attention with creativity and intuition without limiting themselves to traditional archival sources and research methods. Eighteen contributors from a number of disciplines detail inspiring research opportunities that led to recently published works, while offering insights on such topics as starting and finishing research projects, using a wide range of types of sources and methods, and taking advantage of unexpected leads, chance encounters and simple clues. In addition, the narratives trace the importance of place in archival research, the parallels between the lives of research subjects and researchers, and explore archives as sites that resurrect personal, cultural, and historical memory. "Beyond the Archives" sheds light on the creative, joyful, and serendipitous nature of research, addressing what attracts researchers to their subjects, as well as what inspires them to produce the most thorough, complete, and engaged scholarly work. This timely and essential volume supplements traditional-method textbooks and effectively models concrete practices of retrieving and synthesizing information by professional researchers. |

Eerie Archives, Volume Two $41.8 When publisher Jim Warren created Creepy magazine in 1962, he soon realized he’d hit pay dirt on a gruesome gold mine of great comics storytelling. Under the leadership of editor/writer Archie Goodwin, Warren’s hit line of horror comics magazines grew another lurid limb with the introduction of Eerie in 1964, and soon there were two great horror magazines on the rack instead of one. Following in the fetid footsteps of our sinfully successful archive library of Creepy, Dark Horse is also proudly publishing its Eerie equivalent – keeping chilling stories and incredible artwork in the family |

Journeys in Family History: The National Archives’ Guide to Exploring Your Past & Finding Your Ancestors $11.02 This book is The National Archives’ major new guide to family history nationwide and is the one family history book that you will not want to do without. You might be starting out on your ancestral search or seeking fresh genealogical avenues: here you are offered a wealth of reliable advice covering the repositories, records, the processes and more. However, this major new family history publication goes further than most, recognising that the business of establishing lines of descent is enriched by the exploration of ancestral times. Starting with the twentieth century, it looks down the centuries to cover not just finding our ancestors’ names but also how this influenced the records they left behind. You will find that family history is as much an imaginative journey as an exercise in research; this is the unique ‘family history perspective’. Selections from the Oakland Tribune Archives $19.95 The landmark Oakland Tribune clock tower has been telling the time in neon in downtown Oakland since it was built in 1923, but the paper itself first appeared on city streets as early as 1874. For over a half century, the paper was owned and published by the influential and civic-minded Knowland family, who spearheaded efforts to modernize the Port of Oakland, construct the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, and establish a regional park system for Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Following the Loma Prieta earthquake, the damaged clock tower on Thirteenth Streetwhere Harry Houdini once hung by his heels above gawking crowds on Broadwaywas sadly vacant, but today it is once again busy with the buzz and bustle of the newsroom. |
