Why It Is Important to Keep a Family History
It used to be that families never ventured far from home. Most extended family members lived close together, many times in the same town or even as neighbors. Today you don’t find many families that live close. Jobs and education have created families that are spread far and wide. Although we can stay in touch with email and phone calls, we miss out on the personal relationships. As time goes by, we lose touch and never really get to know our extended family.
The interaction we have with our family that lives far away is similar to how we know our ancestors. We know of them, we may even know a little bit about their lives and what they do. But do we know their personal stories?
We get a sense of who we and are our place in a family by connecting to our extended family, whether it is faraway family of today or our ancestors of the past. Personal stories and family experiences are invaluable to making that connection. We need to make the effort to stay in touch with our extended family as well as learn more about our ancestors.
Staying connected with our family that live faraway is both easier and harder than ever before. It is easier because of all the technology available to us today. We can email, send videos and make telephone calls. It is even easier for us to visit our extended family. People in years past might have never got the opportunity to see their family that moved even a few hundred miles away because of the slow methods of transportation available to them. We can quickly cover the distance with modern travel. However, our lives are busier than ever so it is hard to find the time to make those important family connections.
There are simple ways to stay connected with your extended family. It may take a little time, but when you really think about it family is worth the effort. Many of these ideas will also help toward writing your history for your posterity. Someday we will be the ancestors and our descendents will wonder about our stories.
Start a circle journal. If you have siblings or cousins that live faraway, start a circle journal within the group. Start a journal and keep it for a week or so. Write down information about your family, things you have been doing and what your kids are involved in. After you have kept it for a short time, mail it to the next person on the list and they will do the same. Set up the time period so each person gets the journal about every six weeks. When you get the journal back you can read about what everyone else has been doing with their lives, then you update your information and pass it along again. Every year, copy all the pages and mail each person a copy. This is a fun way to keep in touch with a group of people and it is more personal than a yearly update letter.
One of the great things about a circle journal is you are creating a history of your everyday life for your descendants. We tend to record the big events, but not our daily routine. If you research your family history you will find that you cherish the records of the mundane things of everyday. These are the events that make our ancestors real and help us to identify with them. It is important to create that kind of record for your posterity.
Start a family blog. Blogging is a great way to stay in touch and share stories. You can keep your blog private and only invite family members. This is a perfect way to share everyday events and milestones.
Create a digital scrapbook. Digital scrapbooking is an inexpensive, mess free way to create a family record. The great thing about digital scrapbooking is you can share your pages with family far and wide by posting them on the web. You can also have your scrapbook professionally printed and bound and give it as gifts.
There are many different ways to keep a record of your life. Just as records of ancestors are important to us, someday your record will be invaluable to your posterity. Family history is how we know where we have been and where we are going. Make sure your family history has you in it!

Family $20 “Using letters and other family documents, Frazier reconstructs two hundred years of middle-class life, visiting small towns his ancestors lived in, reading books they read, and discovering the larger forces of history that affected them. He observes some of them during the British raid on Danbury, Connecticut, in the Revolutionary War; he follows others west as they pioneer in the wilderness of Ohio and Indiana; he visits the battlefields where they fought the Civil War. Frazier interviews old-timers, uncles, aunts, cousins, maids, and a beer-store owner who knew his dad. He pursues the family saga in aspect from trivial to grand, hoping for “a meaning that would defeat death.” “Family “is a poetic epic of facts, a chronicle of Protestant culture’s rise and fall, a memorial, and a revised view of American history as romantic as it is cold-eyed.>” |

History: A Very Short Introduction $11.95 “There are many stories we can tell about the past, and we are not, perhaps, as free as we might imagine in our choice of which stories to tell, or where those stories end. John Arnold’s addition to Oxford’s popular Very Short Introductions series is a stimulating essay about how people study and understand history. The book begins by inviting us to think about various questions provoked by our investigation of history, and then explores the ways in which these questions have been answered in the past. Such key concepts as causation, interpretation, and periodization are introduced by way of concrete examples of how historians work, thus giving the reader a sense of the excitement implicit in discovering the past–and ourselves.> The aim throughout History: A Very Short Introduction is to discuss theories of history in a general, pithy, and accessible manner, rather than delve into specific periods. This is a book that will appeal to all students and general readers with an interest in history or historiography.” |

Archaeology and Bible History $22.99 “Joseph P. Free’s Archaeology and Bible History, first published in 1950, served well an entire generation of pastors, Sunday school teachers, laypersons, and college students by summarizing the history of the Bible and shedding light on biblical events through archaeological discoveries. The author demonstrated how such data helps us understand the Bible and confirm its historical accuracy. At times he also dealt with issues of biblical interpretation and criticism, always from a historically orthodox position. When the book was withdrawn from circulation in 1976 after the fourteenth printing, many hoped for the day when it would be revised and updated. That task has now been undertaken by one of Dr. Free’s former students and a biblical archaeologist in his own right, Dr. Howard Vos. He has brought the archaeological and historical material up to date and has modified earlier archaeological interpretations where necessary. The bibliography has been almost totally replaced.” |

The History $16 “David Grene, one of the best known translators of the Greek classics, splendidly captures the peculiar quality of Herodotus, the father of history. >Here is the historian, investigating and judging what he has seen, heard, and read, and seeking out the true causes and consequences of the great deeds of the past. In his “History,” the war between the Greeks and Persians, the origins of their enmity, and all the more general features of the civilizations of the world of his day are seen as a unity and expressed as the vision of one man who as a child lived through the last of the great acts in this universal drama. >In Grene’s remarkable translation and commentary, we see the historian as a storyteller, combining through his own narration the skeletal “historical” facts and the imaginative reality toward which his story reaches. Herodotus emerges in all his charm and complexity as a writer and the first historian in the Western tradition, perhaps unique in the way he has seen the interrelation of fact and fantasy. >”Reading Herodotus in English has never been so much fun. . . . Herodotus crowds his fresco-like pages with all shades of humanity. Whether Herodotus’s view is ‘tragic, ‘ mythical, or merely common sense, it provided him with a moral salt with which the diversity of mankind could be savored. And savor it we do in David Grene’s translation.”–Thomas D’Evelyn, “Christian Science Monitor” >”Grene’s work is a monument to what translation intends, and to what it is hungry to accomplish. . . . Herodotus gives more sheer pleasure than almost any other writer.”–Peter Levi, “New York Times Book Review >”" |

Life in the Family: An Oral History of the Children of God $29.95 “From a unique insider’s perspective — including interviews with more than seven-hundred family members — James D. Chancellor charts The Family’s course since its emergence as the most controversial group to grow out of the Jesus People Movement in the 1960s.>Chancellor, who had extraordinary access to rare Family records, includes the experiences of members who have remained loyal to the community and to the founding vision of their prophet, David Brandt Berg. In the first book of its kind — comprising often painful personal histories and firsthand accounts — Chancellor focuses on the motivation and process of becoming a Child of God, the core beliefs of the community, the mission of the disciples, their shifting sexual mores, and the cost of membership in terms of internal discipline and external persecution.>Intense confrontation with the legal, religious, political, and educational establishment marked the movement’s activities from the beginning. The young disciples heeded the call of their prophet to flee a soon-to-be-destroyed North America. Dispersed throughout Europe, Latin America, Africa, and East Asia, they virtually disappeared from the American landscape. In the late 1980s, The Family had gone through extreme theological and lifestyle changes, including a radical reordering of their sexual ethos. The Children of God started to come home. Now a worldwide counterculture of some twelve thousand members, the movement’s colorful history reveals a profoundly religious group that has tested the limits of human experience.” |

Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South $18.17 In 1860, when four million African Americans were enslaved, a quarter-million others, including William Ellison, were "free people of color." But Ellison was remarkable. Born a slave, his experience spans the history of the South from George Washington and Thomas Jefferson to Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. In a day when most Americans, black and white, worked the soil, barely scraping together a living, Ellison was a cotton-gin maker-a master craftsman. When nearly all free blacks were destitute, Ellison was wealthy and well-established. He owned a large plantation and more slaves than all but the richest white planters. While Ellison was exceptional in many respects, the story of his life sheds light on the collective experience of African Americans in the antebellum South to whom he remained bound by race. His family history emphasizes the fine line separating freedom from slavery. |

Dred Scott’s Revenge: A Legal History of Race and Freedom in America $25.99 “>Judge Andrew Napolitano lays bare the twisted legal history of racism in America. >”All men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights” wedded the American soul to the concept that freedom comes from our humanity, not from the government. But American governments legally suspended the free will of blacks for 150 years, and then denied blacks equal protection of the law for another 150 years. How did this happen in America, how were the Constitution and laws of the land twisted so as to institutionalize racism, and how did it or will it end? In a refreshingly candid book, “Dred Scott’s Revenge: A Legal History of Race and Freedom In America,” Judge Andrew P. Napolitano takes a no-holds-barred look at the role of the government in the denial of freedoms based on race. >Endorsements >”The best history of the law and race I’ve ever read. . . Judge Napolitano has written a challenge to anyone who thinks they understand the roots of America’s tangled race relations.” — Juan Williams, National Public Radio >”The Attorney General ignited a firestorm by suggesting that ours was a nation of ‘cowards’ when it comes to conversations about race. Judge Andrew Napolitano is no coward. His brave and incisive book takes the calamitous, contemptuous Dred Scott decision, which held slaves to be “non-persons,” as its starting point. In this sharply written narrative, the Judge shows us how race remains the driving force in almost every aspect of American life, from education to law enforcement. Dred Scott, the person, would have appreciated this graphic and honest appraisal.” — Geraldo Rivera, Fox News Channel >”Judge Napolitano . . . has written a riveting guide to the tumultuous history of our civil rights journey, coming to a post-racial society.” — Nat Hentoff, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, senior fellow at the Cato Institute >”Dred Scott’s Revenge makes it impossible for the self-anointed ‘experts’ on race relations to ever accuse the country of being too afraid to have a national discussion on race. Judge Napolitano lays out 150 years of our national experience . . . and places the blame for much of what’s wrong squarely at the feet of those responsible: the federal government and politicians whose plans, policies, and programs trashed the Constitution. Compelling and timely reading written for the layman, not lawyers ” — Glenn Beck, Nationally syndicated radio talk show host; Host, The Glenn Beck Program, Fox News Channel >”It is said President Obama gave the definitive speech on race; well, Judge Andrew Napolitano has written the definitive book. He] has broken new ground as he examines the precious link between the words men write about freedom and the true freedom of all men.” — Gov. Michael Steele, Chair, Republican National Committee” |

Then Comes Marriage?: A Cultural History of the American Family $14.99 “>In 1949 film star Ingrid Bergman fled to Europe following a public outcry and her denunciation by the U.S. Senate. The charge? She had an adulterous affair with director Roberto Rossellini resulting in a pregnancy, actions for which one senator called her “a horrible example of womanhood and a powerful influence for evil.” Would any star flee the country over so minor an offense today? >Author Rebecca Price Janney examines how people in other eras throughout American history conducted their relationships. How did they fall short of God’s ideal as presented in the Scriptures? How often did they get it right? What has led us to becoming a culture of “anything goes” morality? And, conversely, have there been any surprising improvements in recent years? >This book is not a culture-wars creed, but rather a historical look at the American family, showing that the pattern is more complicated than a downward spiral of morality from our country’s founding to the present. In addition, one of the intriguing features of the book is the author’s close look at marriage and relationships within subcultures that are not often considered, including those of Native Americans, Conquistadors, and slaves. >In order to better understand the state of marriage and relationships in the U.S. today, Christians need to better understand not just Scripture but our nation’s history — and “Then Comes Marriage?” gives readers an accessible, broad, and thought-provoking introduction to both.” |

Family Traditions $9.99 “One of America’s best-loved artists, Thomas Kinkade is known as the “Painter of Light.” In his new book Family Traditions, Kinkade’s beautiful paintings complement his own words and those of other great writers and thinkers, including Margaret Mead, Ben Franklin, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, to celebrate the bonds and traditions of family. Families keep us grounded with subtle reminders of our heritage and, at the same time, serve as a springboard to help us embark on new adventures. Our families provide love, support, and strength. Whatever our family tree looks like, Family Traditions recognizes the unbreakable ties and irreplaceable relationships we share with these special people in our lives, and reminds readers to “Make home a priority in life. Invest time and energy in creating a warm refuge for yourself and your family, a place where everyone can feel nurtured and cared for, safe and protected, free to be exactly who you are” (Thomas Kinkade).” |

History of the Family $47.25 "The History of the Family" concerns the changing interactions between family and social, political and religious structures over the last thousand years of European history. The family is usually described in terms of patterns of kinship, inheritance, and relations between sexes and generations. The author examines the contemporary use of these terms and their evolution from nineteenth-century anthropology and social thought. He then considers how these concepts apply to and reveal the nature of European and other societies. |

Becoming a Family That Heals: How to Resolve Past Issues and Free Your Future $13.99 “Many individuals enter marriage with deep soul wounds from their families of origin. Having little or no skill in conflict resolution, communication, and problem-solving, these couples then wound each other, and eventually, their children. This marital and family conflict leaves individual family members feeling alone and isolated, which can lead to divorce. These patterns are then repeated down through the generations. Working with countless families in their counseling practice over the years, the authors developed a model of relationships that has been used successfully to heal individual and family brokenness. They call this the Soul Healing Love model of relationships, and they’ve taught the concepts to ministers, counselors, marriage mentors, and lay leaders around the world. They now want to share these principles with as many families as possible.” |

Marriage and Family in the Biblical World $22 “Book Description Current debates about marriage and the family assume much about the history of these institutions. But what do we really know about the social and ethical arrangements of these institutions, especially during biblical times? Placing the history of these institutions in context requires not only a study of biblical literature which traverses several millennia but also a grasp of extrabiblical literature and sources culled from several different cultural contexts. In this book six experts in their respective fields trace out the dynamic contours of marriage and family as understood and practiced in ancient Israel and the Near East, in Greek and Roman society, in second temple Judaism, and finally in the New Testament.” |
